Step-by-Step: Import GPX to Your Hand Held GPS

  1. Download the GPX file and verify the route length, elevation gain, and waypoints in your trip planner or mapping app.
  2. Connect the gps handheld to your computer via USB and wait for it to appear as a drive or removable device.
  3. Open the device drive and drop GPX files into the /Garmin/GPX/ folder (or /NewFiles/ on some handheld gps units).
  4. Safely eject the device, then restart your hand held gps so it can import the new routes and waypoints.
  5. On the device, open the Tracks/Routes menu, enable “Show on Map,” and confirm the GPX route aligns with your planned path.

Offline Maps Checklist for Handheld GPS

  • Install regional TopoActive, BirdsEye, or other topo maps on internal storage or a microSD card if your gps handheld device supports it.
  • Keep base maps plus a backup area downloaded—especially for remote trips, multi-day hikes, or off-trail navigation.
  • Test map visibility in daylight and low light; adjust contrast, zoom levels, and map theme before you leave home.
  • Confirm that key waypoints (trailheads, camps, water sources, bail-out points) are visible and labeled on your handheld gps map.
