Installation reality: this is a plumbing job, not a “plug-in gadget”
A whole-home smart shutoff installs on your main water line. That’s great for protection—but it also means your install quality matters.
If you’re comfortable cutting pipe and sweating fittings (or using PEX crimp/press tools), you can DIY. Otherwise, a plumber can usually do this quickly—especially if you prep the space and have parts ready.
Pre-checks (do these before you order)
- Confirm pipe size: most homes are 3/4", but don’t guess. Look for markings at the main shutoff or meter.
- Choose install location: after the meter/main valve, before branches. You want it to control the whole house.
- Plan power: many in-line smart shutoffs need a nearby outlet.
- Check Wi‑Fi signal at the install point: basement corners are common dead zones.
Plumber checklist: what “good” looks like
- Add a bypass loop (if possible): makes maintenance easier and gives you a manual fallback.
- Use full-port fittings: minimize pressure drop and keep your flow rate normal.
- Protect from freezing: if the valve is in an unconditioned area, insulate and manage drafts.
- Secure mounting: avoid strain on the pipe (especially on older copper).
- Leak test + cycle test: run multiple open/close cycles and inspect with a dry paper towel around joints.
App setup checklist (the part most people skip)
- Update firmware before you “dial in” settings.
- Run an initial learning period (a few days) so normal patterns are understood.
- Set meaningful alerts: catastrophic flow, continuous flow, and micro-leak tests (if supported).
- Test notifications on your phone and a second household phone.
Our remodel notes: what we did first (and what surprised us)
We started with a bathroom remodel. The surprise was simple: we had no local shutoff for the bathroom—only the main. So we added standard shutoffs.
Then I realized: if the house ever leaked while we were out, “run home and find the main” isn’t a plan. That’s when we moved to a whole-home smart shutoff.
We chose the Flo by Moen 3/4" model after reading reviews and digging into detection methods.

Common installation mistakes (avoid these)
- Bad location choice: installing after a branch line (it won’t protect the whole home).
- No service access: installing where you can’t reach it later.
- Ignoring Wi‑Fi: “It’s in the basement” is not a connectivity plan.
- No drip loops / water management: protect the power connection and keep cords off the floor.
