The best GPS for geocaching is whichever device you will actually carry, and for a large share of cachers that is a phone. A dedicated handheld is worth buying when one of these is true:

  • You cache under heavy tree cover or in canyons. This is the biggest real difference. A multi-band handheld with a quad-helix antenna holds a lock where a phone drifts badly.
  • You cache all day, away from a charger. Swappable AA lithium batteries mean the day ends when you decide it does.
  • Your caching involves weather, water, or drops. Handhelds are built to a ruggedness and waterproofing standard phones only reach with a case.
  • You want your phone battery for the drive home. A day of GPS use with the screen on is brutal on a phone.

Best for: Cachers moving from urban park-and-grabs to trail caches, and families who want a shared device the kids can carry.

The realistic answer for serious cachers: carry both. The phone handles discovery, photos, and reading long logs. The handheld handles navigation, accuracy, and being the device that still works at hour seven.

  • Quad-helix antenna. Handles being held at odd angles and in dense cover better than a flat patch antenna.
  • Paperless caching support. The device should load GPX with the full description, the hint, size, difficulty, terrain, attributes, and recent logs, and let you log a find offline.
  • Waypoint capacity. Modern units hold thousands of caches. Older ones cap at a few hundred, which is limiting on a caching trip.

  • Walk in from at least 100 feet away at a steady pace. GPS units use motion to determine heading; standing still and spinning gives a useless bearing.
  • Stop when the distance stops dropping. Put the device away and start thinking like the hider instead of following an arrow that is now noise.
  • Read the hint and the terrain rating. A terrain 1.5 cache is not up a tree. A hint that mentions "look up" means look up.
  • Look for the unnatural — a stacked pile of sticks, a rock that does not match its neighbors, a bolt that should not be there.
  • Check recent logs. "Coords seem off by 20 feet north" is the most useful sentence in geocaching.
  • Let the device settle. Accuracy improves for the first minute or two after arriving at a spot, particularly under trees.

A paperless workflow that works

  1. Build a list on the website or in the app for the area you are visiting, filtered by difficulty, terrain, and cache size.

  3. Download offline maps on the phone as a backup before you leave coverage.
  4. Log finds on the device in the field, then upload when you get home.
  5. Carry a pen. The most forgotten piece of geocaching equipment, and the physical log still has to be signed.
  6. Bring swag if you plan to trade, and take nothing without leaving something of equal or greater value.

Etiquette and access: respect posted land rules, stay on trails where required, re-hide caches exactly as you found them, and be discreet around non-cachers. Public land agencies have their own rules about placement and access; check before caching in unfamiliar areas.

  • Trusting the arrow at close range. Under about 25 feet, the pointer is noise. Switch to searching.
  • Wrong coordinate format or datum. Silently puts you in a completely wrong spot.
  • No offline data. A phone-only cacher with no signal has nothing.
  • Buying an old single-band unit. Worse than your phone in the open and not much better under trees.
  • Rechargeable-only handhelds for long trips. AA compatibility is a feature, not a legacy holdover.
  • Ignoring the terrain rating with kids along. A terrain 4 cache is a real hike or a climb.
