- Frequency and beam width. Higher frequency (around 200 kHz and up) gives sharper detail in a narrow cone; lower frequency (around 50 to 83 kHz) covers a wider area and reads deeper. For shallow, clear water, sharper is better; for deep water, wider and lower wins.

- Screen size and brightness. On a kayak in full sun, a dim 3.5-inch screen is unreadable. Five inches with a sunlight-readable panel is the practical minimum for comfortable use.
- Battery life and chemistry. Look for stated runtime under real load, not standby. Lithium iron phosphate packs are lighter, hold voltage flat, and survive cold far better than sealed lead acid.
- Waterproof rating. IPX7 for the display, and confirm that the rating covers the connector, not just the housing.
- Mounting hardware. The single most common source of frustration. Check that the included arm actually fits a kayak gunwale or a rental boat transom before you buy.
- GPS and mapping. Worth it if you fish unfamiliar water and want to mark and return to spots. Skip it if you fish two ponds you know by heart.
Setup and power without a boat
For a kayak:
- Mount the transducer where it stays submerged and away from turbulence — a scupper mount, a through-hull shoot-through-hull install with marine epoxy, or an adjustable arm off the side.

It reliably tells you: depth, bottom hardness and composition, the presence of weed lines and drop-offs, whether there are fish in the column, and roughly how deep they are holding. For most bank and kayak anglers, that is most of the value of electronics.
It does not reliably tell you: the species, the exact size, or a picture of structure to the sides. Fish ID icons on every sonar are an interpretation, not a fact — learn to read raw arches instead. Side imaging requires a boat-speed platform and a proper transducer, so no castable does it well.
The realistic workflow for bank fishing: cast the sonar out, walk it back slowly along the bank to map the depth profile, note where the drop-off and the hard bottom are, then put the sonar away and fish those spots with your actual rod. Used that way, a castable earns its keep in the first hour.

- Casting a sonar ball on light tackle. These are heavy. A light rod and 8 lb line will part company with it.
- Trusting fish icons. Turn fish ID off, learn arches. Icons hide the information you need.
