How it works, and why it looks so different
Traditional 2D sonar points down and paints a history: the right edge is now, and everything to the left already happened as the boat moved. Side and down imaging do the same thing at higher frequency with a thin fan beam.
Forward-facing sonar points ahead and refreshes the whole picture many times per second. Nothing scrolls. What you see is the current state of a cone of water in front of the transducer, and you aim that cone by physically rotating the pole the transducer is mounted on.
Most systems offer three views:
- Forward: a fan looking ahead, the mode most people use most of the time.
- Down: a fan looking straight down, useful for vertical presentations and ice fishing.
- Perspective / scout: a wide, shallow-angle view of the surface area ahead, used for scanning flats and locating schools.
