This is why the same pitcher "loses velocity" between facilities. Almost always, someone moved. A device rated at plus or minus 1 mph read from 30 degrees off is not a 1 mph measurement.
Correct positions:
- Pitching: directly behind the catcher, in line with the pitch, at roughly the height of the ball. Behind the backstop is fine.
- Exit velocity: directly behind the hitter or directly in front behind an L-screen, in line with the intended ball flight.
- Never from the side. Not from the dugout, not from the third-base line, not from behind the mound at an angle.

Getting good readings, every time
- Align first, then everything else. If you get one thing right, get the angle right.
- Match ball height. Mount the radar near the height of the ball's path rather than at ground level or overhead.
- Get reasonably close. Well within the maximum range is more reliable than at the edge of it.
- Watch for interference. Chain link fences, moving cars, and other radar devices nearby can produce false readings. Move if numbers look impossible.
- Use fresh batteries. Low batteries cause missed readings that look like device failure. AAA lithium cells last longer and work in cold.
- Record the setup with the data. Position, distance, ball type, temperature. Without it, comparing sessions is guesswork.
