The P-series (enclosed CoreXY) is the sweet spot for most people: it prints PLA and PETG all day and can handle ABS and ASA because it holds chamber heat. The A-series bedslingers are the budget entry, and the A1 mini in particular is the printer to hand a teenager. The X-series adds premium touches like quick-swap nozzles and better sensors.

The tradeoff to understand before you buy: Bambu machines are the least repairable of the three. Hotends, AMS parts, and mainboards are proprietary. That is fine while the company is healthy and shipping spares, and it is a real risk to weigh if you plan to keep one machine for a decade.

Creality: the widest price ladder in printing

Creality's advantage is coverage. There is a Creality machine at almost every price point from about $170 to $1,500, and the installed base is so large that any problem you have has a video answer already.

Two lines matter in 2026. The Ender 3 V3 series is the modern bedslinger: auto leveling, a direct-drive extruder, and a price that makes a failed print an annoyance rather than a disaster. The K-series brought CoreXY motion and Klipper-derived firmware down to a price the Ender used to occupy.

The tradeoff: quality control is more variable than the other two. Belt tension, frame squareness, and bed flatness are things you may need to check yourself. If you enjoy that, Creality gives you the most machine per dollar. If you do not, the extra $200 for a Bambu buys back your weekends.

Prusa: the machine that is still running in 2035

Prusa costs more, and the reason shows up in year three, not week one. The company publishes complete assembly documentation, sells individual screws, ships printable replacement parts as STL files, and keeps firmware updates flowing to machines that are years old. PrusaSlicer is open source and is the codebase most competing slicers were built from.

The Core One is Prusa's answer to the enclosed CoreXY category. It is slower to spec-sheet than a comparable Bambu and more expensive, but it is designed to be serviced by its owner. For a school, a makerspace, a small print farm, or anyone who bills for parts, that changes the math: a machine you can fix in an hour beats a faster machine you have to ship back.

Running costs nobody quotes you

The printer is the smallest line item over three years. Budget for these:

  • Nozzles: brass nozzles are consumables. If you print carbon-fiber or glow-in-the-dark filament, you need hardened steel and you will still replace it.

  • Multi-color waste: tool-changing systems purge filament at every color change. A four-color print can spend more plastic on purge towers than on the model.
  • Electricity: small. A typical FDM printer draws about 60 to 150 W while printing, so even heavy use is a few dollars a month.
  • Ventilation: if you print ABS or ASA, plan for an enclosure and a filter or an open window. That is a safety line item, not an optional upgrade.

  • Buying for the material you might print someday. Most owners print PLA and PETG forever. Buy the enclosure when you actually need ABS.
  • Comparing peak speed numbers. A machine advertised at 600 mm/s prints most real geometry far slower because acceleration and cooling, not top speed, set the limit.
  • Ignoring where it will live. These machines are loud, they smell during printing, and a bedslinger needs clearance front and back equal to its bed depth. Measure the shelf before you order.
  • Skipping the maintenance schedule. Belt tension, lead screw lubrication, and nozzle replacement are the difference between a printer that works and one that sits broken in a closet.
  • Assuming a cheaper printer saves money. Failed prints cost filament and hours. Three wasted spools erases the savings on an entry machine.
